4 of 4 thought this review was well written
This album originally came out in 2004, as a release from Planet Noise Records. When 3 signed to Metal Blade and replaced bassist Joe Cuchelo (which was probably a good thing since there were already 2 other Josephs in the band), they re-released Wake Pig with 2 new tracks, new artwork, and made new mixes for the songs. I was not disappointed with the new bassist or the record, or the subtle new mixes. Though it follows no clear storyline, its been said that Wake Pig is a concept album, and you really get an atmospheric feel when you listen to it. While it has its slower songs, the album really shows off 3's more aggressive side, introducing more of a hard rock feel than their previous albums. Like all their albums, it also lets every member of the band shine with their talents, most notable probably being Joey Eppard's flamenco/bass-slapping/how does he make his guitar do that?! guitar style. Even if for some reason you do not like this album/band, there's no denying how much of a breath of fresh air it is from this dying rock music scene.
Joey Eppard - Guitar/Vocals
Billy Riker - Guitar
Joe Cuchelo - Bass, Daniel Grimsland - Bass on new tracks
Joe Stote - Percussion/Keys
Chris "Gartdrumm" Gartmann - Drums
Alien Angel - What an intro to an album. The opening riff punches you right in the face, then comes an eerie verse, and a chorus is so infectious it isn't funny: "Are you an angel whose ship ran aground?" Very powerful song, and the best choice for an intro. 5/5
Monster - Starts of with some impressive guitar work from Joey, and a very metal sounding riff mixed in with it. The song is short and repetitive, probably the most boring off the cd, yet not to the point where you want to skip it. 3.5/5
Dregs - The opening riff seems simple, but I dare you to try to figure out how to play it. This song was on their previous album, Summercamp Nightmare, but the style and mood really fit in better with this album. "Days gone by, welcome to the dregs of my mind". If the other 2 songs aren't stuck in your head by now, this one will be, I promise. 5/5
Wake Pig - The title track, and a very energetic and epic song. Very metal-esque, including a guitar solo that sounds very Iron Maiden. The lyrics and mood convey some sort of battle: "Wake up soldier, there's no dreams left in the dark. Save them, save yourself". The bridge comes in with acoustic guitars and presents a chilling melody. The last notes of song perfectly lead to . . . 5/5
Bramfatura - Go ahead, pick your jaw up from off the floor. This is a short instrumental track, consisting of Joey playing his guitar in a way that I've never before heard from any human being. You will love listening to this, whether you play music or not. Stu-freakin-pendous 10/5
Trust - Very cool song. Some impressive drumming, and very macabre lyrics. Some nice one-liners like: "And I shudder to think that this is the catastrophe that fate has in mind", and "They stopped digging for you long ago". This is a favorite for a lot of people, and rightfully so. 5/5
Dogs of War - My personal favorite on the album. An acoustic song that effortlessly drifts into different keys and modes, and that makes it all the more effective. Sort of an upbeat sad song with the line "We could run away, ah but they would hunt us down". 5/5.
Soul to Sell - Definitely the most pop sounding song on the album so far. An upbeat beat, good song. 4/5
One Way Town - One of the two new songs put on the re-release, and a good addition at that. More of a straightforward pop song than any of the others, but it still has powerful riffs to back it up. Even though it is more pop-ish than the other songs, its melodies are almost Indian sounding, and you could just imagine it being played on a sitar. Maybe a tad too long though. 4.5/5
Queen - Very cool song. The opening riff promises to stay in your head for a long time. Again, it sounds very metal-ish, and it has a delicate medieval bridge. Scary lyrics: "I'm dreaming, I'm drowning, I'm wide awake". Awesome song. 5/5
Circus Without Clowns - Kind of a silly sounding title, but do not be led astray. This is the second of the two songs added to the re-release. The verses are slow with Joey using his throaty scary voice, and then the chorus picks up speed. Very good solo from Mr. Riker. The song sounds different from the others, but by no means in a bad way. 5/5
Where's Max? - On the original release of this song, it was completely instrumental. On the re-release they added some vocal tracks from friend of the band, Max Olsen. It almost sounds like Iggy Pop's vocals on Rolodex Propaganda, but not as good. I personally think it was better before, and it does sort of get boring. Excellent drum and bass work though. 3/5
Amaze Disgrace - This song appeared on: Half Life (3's live album), Summercamp Nightmare, Been to the Future (Joey's solo album), and Wake Pig, all with slightly different titles such as Amazedisgrace, and Amazed Disgrace. Why? I don't know, but it's a great song, and it was the most tampered with song when they remixed Wake Pig. When Joey sings the word "screams" at the end, I still think its a violin. Eargasm 6/5
Then the song fades and comes back playing an instrumental version of "Trust", with Gartdrumm just laying it all down. kind of pointless
I realize I didn't go into very much description of the instrumentation in the songs. I can't think of how else to desribe most of them , other than simply "3". This is a band who knows where they're going, and has very much made a style of their own. As I said before, they are a breath of fresh air, and this album shows great talent.

When I read your review it seems like this would be an album I would enjoy, but I can't stand his voice.

3 is an amazing band and joey eppard is an original guitarist
Digging: Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs | | | The vocalist is the only part of this band people might not generally enjoy... Mainly due to his higher register. He sounds similar to the singer from coheed and cambria, except better.
Otherwise, this is great stuff, and they have a swell live show.
I don't really care for TBT reviews though, and this one is pretty run-of-the-mill TBT.

you can't really define, I guess if you wanted to, you could call it prog - rock??? I don't even know what to call, it is however a lot darker than their previous efforts, if you listen to this first, the older albums will shock. They too are amazing. Anyway who doesn't bother to listen to this amazing album really is losing out. This instrumentation is amazing, so are Joey's vocals. So talented.

I understand this is Prog Rock but I couldn’t really tell from the review what this band really sound like. The vocalist sings in a high pitch? What does this sound like if comparable to anything?
