Doom Metal
I was at the cd store, and i saw a compilation called "gothic doom metal". I am mostly into hardcore and thrash, and occassionally death and black metal.
I read the sticky about the kinds of metal, so i have a good idea of what this kind of music will sound like, but can someone recomend me some songs? Thanks in advance |

They call and I come.................
Here goes. if you want the quick answer, I think you will hate that compilation. Gothic doom metal is likely to be along the lines of My Dying Bride etc. That is, overblown, romantic lyrics with masses of keyboards against a backdrop of what is essentially slowed down death metal. If you're into hardcore and thrash then I guess that will sound like hell! But if you are undetterred, then read on. There are loads of different styles of doom metal and the genre has become so wide that any band that plays reasonably slowly and has lyrics that aren't about gutting your mother is included. Personally I think that this is all bollocks and apply the simple formula: slow + true metal X Black Sabbath = doom. Anyhow, I digress: Some doom metal for ya (I only accept two subgenres, all that funeral doom bollocks can bugger off): Death/Doom: Like the name suggests, a mixture of death metal and doom metal. The obvious candidates are Paradise Lost (first two albums only), Anathema (up to and including The Silent Enigma), My Dying Bride, November's Doom, Morgion, Decomposed True Doom: the proper stuff! Solitude Aeturnus, Solstice, Trouble, Candlemass (RIP), St Vitus, The Obsessed, Reverend Bizarre, Orodruin, While Heaven Wept etc You need any more info, just give me a shout |

Yeah Dm.com has lots of stuff on there but a lot of crap too.
Interestingly there is a strong link between punk and doom. The Obsessed started out as a punk band, Lee from Cathedral was Napalm Death while Griff was in Bomb Culture and Rich from Solstice was in Sore Throat. Funny how you can go from being as fast as possible to the other end of the spectrum eh? |

Also, you went a whole post on doom metal without mentioning Unsilence or The River! I can't speak for Unsilence (I'm only just starting out in this doom metal lark), but The River are very good. |

Yeah, I need to absorb some more of this stuff, I haven't really go into it yet. I was given The Beyond by Cult of Luna from a friend today, what would ye classify it as? I have seen it classed as Doom Metal before but it sounds kinda different from other bands of the genre that I have heard so far (I haven't heard much Doom Metal yet though).

Yeah they are kinda wierd. I haven't listened to the whole disk yet, I shall study it tonight. I saw the video for Watchtower, it was cool. However, if it isn't Doom Metal, I can shut up. Sorry.
