REVIEW: Paiste 20" 2002 Heavy Ride
Located here: http://paiste.com/products/cymbals/2002_rides.php#heavyride , the Paiste 2002 Heavy Ride has the following characteristics:
Weight: heavy Volume: medium loud to very loud Stick Sound: pingy Intensity: slightly dry Sustain: medium Bell Character: strong, integrated Sound Character: Bright, full, warm, energetic. Fairly wide range, clean mix. Fairly heavy feel. Strong, defined ping over, full, warm, slightly dark wash. Well suited for louder playing. I bought it at Massmusic.net for $215 plus Shipping and Handling. I bought it as a replacement for my Sabian B8 ride as i felt that i needed a new and "better" sound. When i was looking for a new ride cymbal i was trying to find a ride that had a bright ping, good stick definition, and not very much wash. I came upon the following rides to decide upon: Sabian Paragon, Paiste 2002 Heavy ride, Zildjian A Custom Ping ride. When i played the Paragon it fit all of my needs besides the bright ping; I felt that the ping was very dull and wasn't "piercing" or "cutting" if that makes any sense. When i played the Ping ride i felt that it had a little bit more wash than i wanted and the bright ping still wasn't quite where i wanted it. That is why i ultimately chose the Paiste 2002 Heavy ride; it was everything that i wanted and more. When i received the cymbal at my house i had parts of my kit at a friends house for a gig that night so i couldn't play it with my set. I did set it up where my B8 ride was and played it just to check it out. It sounded really good and all, but i wasn't completely 100% impressed and satisfied with how it sounded. I started playing around with the parts of my set that i did have and i noticed how the ride always cut through. If i was crashing all of my cymbals or running through the toms the ride cymbal always cut through, it was amazing. The more i play it the more happy i am with it. Later when i set the rest of my kit up i was blown away with how well it goes with everything i play. The first jam session i had with it i was so happy with how much it cut through my playing, the guitarist, and the bassist. Later that week i had somebody else play my drums and i walked around the room listening and no matter where i was it always cut through. Something that i just noticed recently was how satisfying it is to play this cymbal. With my old B8 i'd constantly want it to be louder and i'd hit it harder and harder but i couldn't get any more out of it besides more wash and bad overtones. It also didn't feel like it had a great playing surface. The stick didn't bounce well or something because it didn't feel like a wonderful cymbal, it's hard to describe. The cymbal is meant more for rock/metal and i was hoping that it wasn't too one dimensional or unversatile. It is surprisingly more versatile than you would think. Something that i failed to mention in this review is the bell. Just like the body of the cymbal, the bell cuts through and projects very well. A nice solid bell sound with both the tip of the stick and the shaft completes this awesome cymbal. Pros: Great stick definition, bright ping, little wash, great overtones. Cons: It's heavy so you might need a good stand? This is a fantastic cymbal and i would expect to pay much more than $215 for this product. This image is 2592 x 1944 pixels so i will just put a link to it instead of making this page oversized. http://www.davidzych.com/marc/heavyride/hrtop.jpg For my purposes and wants/needs, i give this cymbal a 10/10. |

I'll review my Vault hats, PDP MX kit, roadpro stand and maybe the 17" A Custom crash even though everybody knows and loves that.

Excellent review, Fish. Seems like a good price too! I have a 20" Zildjian K heavy ride. It'd be interesting to compare those side by side as it has many of the same qualities (and a killer bell!).

I listened to the sound samples of the K Heavy/K Custom heavy and they sounded pretty good from what i can remember but i don't know why i didn't pursue them further.
