Zildjian Avedis 22" Ping Ride
Manufactered by: Zildjian
Price: $271 ($269 on Musician's Friend) I've been wanting this ride for a long time. Over a year and a half at least. I usually don't go around trying cymbals at every drum shop I can find once a month, so I go by testimonial from members on this board. I was looking for something with stick definition, but not clangy, and I wanted something with tone, and something that was warmer and LOUD! I had narrowed down my search between a 20" K Heavy Ride and a 22" A Ping Ride. I played on a 20" K Regular Ride at a recording studio and I loved it. My Guitar Center had TWO 20" Ping Rides, but it was too small for me. As chance would have it, I stumbled upon a 22" Ping Ride at a drum shop, the same shop I bought my Sonors from over two years ago. One problem: it had sizzles. I started trying out all the rides there, to make sure it was the sound I was looking for. I liked the 20" Medium Ride, but it was still too washy for me. I did like a 21" Istanbul Sultan Ride quite a bit, seemed a little too pingy, but at the time I was liking it more then the Ping Ride with the rivets. I had one of the guys play on them while I stepped back and listened. Boy, that 21" Sultan Ride was clangy as hell, I did not like it at all from a distance. But the 22" Ping Ride, even with the rivets, sounded great. The man told me I should just take the rivets out. I spent some time with the Ping Ride on a set before I bought it (and this was an impulse buy, I just came in to look, not to buy). Taking it home, I spent over an hour getting the rivets out. Once I did, I mounted the heavy beast, and played on it, and oh my god its the best ride cymbal I've ever heard. The stick definition is EXCELLENT, and the tone/wash was perfect. In fact, it's the only part of my drumset that sounds better without earplugs then with. Overall, I'm very happy. Its quite different, though, going from my 20" Wuhan (which was a Medium-Thin or a Medium weight, methinks) to this. That thing sounded good, but was too washy, and it was slightly crashable. This thing is a hefty mother, and the ping took some time to get used to, but I of course managed. I can't crash it, though, it sounds way clangy. But I don't care, I have 3 crash cymbals already, I'd rather have the perfect ride then a good one that's crashable. |

Hm, I really like the 20" one. I've narrowed my ride choices down to that, the Earth ride, and the Sabian Raw Bell Dry Ride - unless I stumble upon something even better.
And a ride is what I'm getting next. I even have the money for it - just not the time (Guitar Center trips for me and my friends (esp. if trying out something we plan to buy) takes quite a while). I like the review though. I'd also rather have a perfect ride, 'cause I don't really like to crash my ride. |

Nice review. I'm in the market for cymbals to better complement my Orions, and I'm looking for something with high definition with not too much wash and sustain; the ping ride is now something I'm considering.
If I manage to figure out Rep, then +. Either way, props and gratitude for taking the time and writing an informative review. ~~ |
