Mourning Beloveth – Grab a Guinness and Doom it up Irish Style!

Ah Ireland, The Emerald Isle, Eire, whatever you want to call it, brings forth thoughts of terrible road systems (and if you have not been there, but end up there at one point, I do not recommend driving, Irish roads are total shit), Guinness, Jameson Whiskey, Father Ted, Graham Norton (who is probably the only person to come out of Cork that has an understandable accent) tons of authors, rain, sheep, the Blarney Stone, Leprechauns, amazing doom metal…wait what?

Yes, that is correct; out of Ireland we get a fantastic doom band called Mourning Beloveth. Now this is not really traditional doom like say Candlemass, but instead more of a modern kind of death doom. Death vocals are very plentiful on the albums, but there is also a fair share of clean vocals as well. The music is slow, drudgy, dreary, and hauntingly melodic simultaneously.

The lineup of the band has stayed quite consistent, with only one member leaving, and there having been no replacement for this lost keyboard player. So that just logically brings me to present to you the lineup, as I typically do, and surprisingly enough there are no real incredibly off the wall Irish first names in the band really (okay Dermod isn’t exactly common outside of the land of Eire, but he isn’t in the band anymore either.)

Current line-up:
Darren Moor - Vocals (ex-Karnayna)
Frank Brennan - Vocals and Guitar (Old Season)
Adrian - Bass
Brian - Guitar
Timmy – Drums

Former/past member(s):
Dermod Smyth - keyboards (Karnayna, Old Season)

At this point I do feel it necessary to include a link to their website, for it is a good website. http://www.mourningbeloveth.com/

I have only heard their full lengths, and not their demos or the split, but considering the extremely high quality of the music found on all three full lengths, I would not expect much less about the other releases.

Here is the discography in full:

Debut Demo, 1996
Mourning Beloveth Demo, 1996
Autumnal Fires Demo, 1998
Dust Full-length, 2001
The Sullen Sulcus Full-length, 2002
Mourning Beloveth/Lunar Gate Split, 2003
A Murderous Circus Full-length, 2005

One thing that is very characteristic of all the releases that I have heard is that the songs tend to be quite long. Now I know this is where people reading this who are not that familiar with doom or anything like that will instantly think of Opeth, and aside from having long song lengths, Mourning Beloveth has about as much in common with Opeth as Brittany Spears does.

Throughout the duration of these long songs, they do take quite a few twists and turns while maintaining the very slow to mid paced typical doom style, and while these songs are long and have many many parts that accomplish a lot musically, some people might also have the thought of prog spring to mind, but these guys are not progressive in any way either.

The only thing I can see that is unfortunate for this band is their lack of recognition in their home country. Many of you know I spent the last year in Germany, and made friends with many lads from Ireland, and not a single one of them was into metal at all (which seems to be fairly normal for Ireland), however at one point some of them had a friend come out to visit, who was a huge metalhead, with a CD collection that could keep up with just about any one on this board, and yet he had never heard of this band either. However, the Irish mentality and way of life from what I have seen is not very metal at all, so it is quite surprising a band of this caliber has come out of this Island.

I think though, that it is about time for me to present to you some Mourning Beloveth, and quit talking.

The Mountains are Mine is an excellent song. The instrumental section at about 7 minutes is just sublime.

I have the Autumnal Fires demo too and it is good, just lacking in production and execution.

Frank has a great clean singing voice, he would be great in an epic doom band.

Old Season are also ace.

hmm...I wanted to hear about them since they're supporting Primordial in my country but this makes me even more curious.

Grab a guiness such a cliche .

Good write up the first paragraph made me laugh on the perception of Ireland.

EDIT: Also to the Irish thing about how barely anyone listens to metal is true you would be lucky to find someone who knew opeth or even a band that does growl and is not metalcore I only know one other person who would know about black and death.

I introduced him to that music.

Its all dance over here which is okay aswell.

MB are one of the few death/doom bands that I still enjoy. I think it's Frank's voice that makes them stand apart from most of the tripe that is marketed as doom these days.

indeed, very different. I was one of the few who could understand the cork lads no problem, a lot of the other native english speakers there had a lot of trouble (including some of the ones form ireland) understanding them, and 2 of them asked me if they were speaking irish gaelic as opposed to english

Wow.. great band.

I love this doom metal stuff, pretty new to me and i just love the way it is constructed. Very low, deep, bass filled guitars throughout.. i love that.

The guys growl, and the clean vocals are both very well done.

Favorite track that you have uploaded is definately "My Sullen Sulcus".

Thanks for the good music.
