I need a new bass

Ok, so i have about AUD$500or US$380 to spend on a new bass for xmas. I was gonna get a cab but i realised i dont need one just yet as my amp will do fine for now. So any suggestions? I play in a punk band.

Not sure how good these are, I'm gonna read some reviews now. These aren't my only options. Im open for suggestions.

I think it would be a little funny if you had a hollow body while playing punk

I'd stay away from Washburn... my Washburn guitar is crap. The freaking nut fell of, and the finish cracks easily.

The GSR205 should fall easily within your price range. Looks pretty good too, though personally im not a big fan of ibanez basses. I keep hearing bad things about them.

Could look at epiphone PERHAPS, or maybe a spector...search around.

personally with i would either go for a 6 or a 4, five strings seem to have something missing rather than something added on, they just dont seem to get the advantage they are trying to give for me, but i would also look into yamaha and esp i know someone was going on about how they liked their ESP LTD B-55 Bass and thats $505 on the link above, but as always, go to your local guitar store and try out as much as possible and haggle, shop around and get stores to compete, they want your sales, i had a mate who paid £389 for a epi TB and that night i found one in a different store for £300 without them knocking anything off and thats a store not online

Ibanez gsr200 would do you just fine. or a yamaha rbx 270, they're very good.
also check out the cort action series, they're about 600 bucks but worth the extra cash

Seeing as you play punk, I woulkd get a bass with a P/J setup.

For that price, your best bet (IMO) is get a bass from Rondo, with the money left over buy some new pickups, and some strings you like.

Threadstarter, I'd recommend saving a bit more until you have about a grand or so and then buy something a bit more worthwhile(A used Fender P, perfect for punk). There's really no need to buy a new bass with that budget unless you old one is broken.

That said..

What is it with you people saying that a 5er "misses" the high C. A 5 is a completly different animal than a 6:
-5 has a slimmer neck than a 6
-The B sounds different on a 5 than on a 6
-Less chance of neck dive due to smaller neck and less tuners(unless you got a heavy body)
-Muting all strings is more difficult on a 6

Also, for people like me a high c is completly unnecessary as I'd just find no use for it. So instead of cluttering things up with a unnecessary strings I'd prefer to "just" have 5. I'm not particularly picking on you Khnazo but lately I just see that kind of sentiment expressed on this forum whenever someone brings up wanting a 5er. There's reasons for wanting one or the other, but saying that a 5er seems to miss a string is just ignorant.

dont worry about it mate thats just my opinion and you have yours, best way for other people to make up their minds is to find out them selfs but this is how i felt when i was playing a 5 in a shop compare teh the exact same model just with 6

Ibanez GSRs are great. Mine keeps up with my Fender P-bass Deluxe and even beats it sometimes. Truth.
