Mixolydian in the key of C Major is G Mixolydian

C Ionian: C D E F G A B
G Mixo.: G A B C D E F

at least thats my understanding...oh, and you stole my avatar

...

You use C-mixolydian, not G-mixolydian.

If you use mixolydian with a C-chord, that means you're probably in the key of Fmaj or Dm... In that case, you use C-Mixolydian, which is C D E F G A Bb C.

how cum this is so confusing??? i mean i no all the positions of each of the modes but i dont no which ones to use!!!???
So let me get this straight again, if im playing the mixolydian mode over a C chord i would use the C mixolydian C D E F G A Bb C right? not G mixolydian C D E F G A B C?

Well, I assume you know what you're doing when you use modes. Which means you would only use mixolydian over a C chord when you're in the key of F major. Otherwise, the only reason you would use mixolydian over a C chord when the chord itself does not reflect a mixolydian degree would be a) to add in colour or b) you're a moron.

It really isnt all that confusing, Eternal Blood is just making it sound harder than it is. If he knew what he was doing he wouldnt be asking, so stop showing off what you know and actually help someone k?

Modes are just the same exact scale but starting and ending on a different note. You can use a C major chord on any mode in C major. Including minor modes. People make modes into bigger deals than they really are.

Instead of just saying "im playing a C chord" you have to say what Key you are playing in. If you are playing a chord progression in C major, than technicaly you would want to play C Ionian over a C chord in C major.

If you are playing a C chord in F major, then you the modaly correct scale would be C mixolodian. (C,D,E,F,G,A,Bb)

I'm not trying to show off. He said he's going to play mixolydian over a C chord. That -inherently- means that he's in the key of Fmaj (or any relative mode) unless he's playing jazz, which I highly doubt. It escaped my mind that he could have meant to suggest a chord without a context and has no idea how to use modes at all. Personally, I wouldn't have asked how to play a specific mode over a specific chord without actually intending to do it; I wouldn't have randomly picked a mode without knowing what it is and how it sounds, so the natural assumption is that he at least knew the key and was telling us that.

If you're playing B major over a G# minor chord, then to my eyes and ears, you're playing in G# minor. Keys really are generally determined by the rhythm. If you think and resolve in terms of B major, then you're going to be resolving to some really wacky tones in comparison to the G# minor. Ergo, no, B major and G# minor are not the same scale, because they require completely different thought processes in order to utilise them.

Repeat for any other combination of relevant modes.
