Featured Artist #7 - Vinnie Colaiuta
I felt like doing a drummer, since I play drums. Although he is not strictly a musician of any genre, Vince is a monster and need respect. Is any true musician chained to one style of music?
Bio from: http://musicbase.h1.ru/PPB/ppb5/Bio_568.htm A very versatile drummer, Vinnie Colaiuta is impossible to pigeonhole as Just a specialist in only one or two areas. He is capable of playing very Credible pop jazz, or recording with Buell Neidlinger and Marty Krystall in a post Bop quartet. Colaiuta's talents were obvious from an early age. After Attending the Berklee School of Music, he worked with Frank Zappa (1978) and then performed with Joni Mitchell for several years. Settling in Los Angeles in 1983, Colaiuta worked for seven years as a very busy studio musician. In 1990 he went back on the road with Sting and in 1994 had his first record date as a leader, the self-titled Vinnie Colaiuta on the Stretch label. www.houseofdrumming.com has some great info, sound clips, downloads, etc. Vinnie is probably my favorite drummer. He plays with a ton of people, playing a great variety of music genres. He has played with Chick Corea, Sting, Frank Zappa, Megadeth, Christina Auguleria, etc. He is extremely versatile; he can play convincingly in literally any style of music. He can play with technical marvel, but always plays very expressively and creatively. His rhythmic concepts alone blow most drummers out of the water. Suggested Listening: Chick Corea Akoustic Band - Alive Chick Corea at the Blue Note, Tokyo Karizma - d0cument Colaiuta, Garfield, Pena (available at www.houseofdrumming.com) Colaiuta, patitucci, pasqua (available at the above link, also) Stern, Brunel, Childs, Colaiuta - Dedication Randy Waldman - Unreel Vinnie Colaiuta (solo album) John Patitucci - Sketchbook The Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship Tape Alan Holdsworth - Secrets Randy Waldman - Wigged Out Also, I would suggest his work with Zappa, but that doesn't really fit into context... maybe fusion at best, if I really wanted to relate it |
