Featured Artist # 51: Pino Palladino
Pino Palladino was born in Cardiff Wales. He begun his musical career at the age of 14 playing the guitar in a local Wales band called Trapper. Once he reached the age of 17 he switched over to bass and after a year of playing switched to a fretless.
During the late 70s Palladino original was just playing bass in local bands. When he was 23 he moved to London to play with The Millionaires. Touring the US and the UK with the Millionaires and the Q-Tips (Featuring Paul Young on vocals) was a great experience for him. In New York where Palladino was touring with Jools Holland he picked up a Fretless Stingray. Pino popularity grew immensely in the 80s. He played sessions on his fretless for Gary Numan on his album “I Assassin. Then he toured with him. Also during 1983 he recorded the album “No Parlez with Paul Young, which would bring Palladino worldwide fame. Palladino would join Paul Young’s The Royal Family and record and tour with them for 5 years. Also during this touring he had musical affairs with many artists including but not limited to David Gilmour, Pete Townshend, Don Henley, Elton John, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins. During the 90s Palladino concentrated mostly on studio work but made time for some live shows with Pete Townshend and Jeff Beck. In 1999 Palladino, Manu Katche, and Dominic Miller record original material under the name “The Tweeters. (Palladino is in the left corner.. Early in the 2000s Palladino recorded with D’Angelo on his Voodoo album. This got many requests for help with fellow R&B and hip-hop artist’s albums. Also Pino joined the band “The Soultronics who features Ahmir and ?uestlove of the Roots, they are a great funk/soul/jazz band and have a great live show. In 2002 Pino Palladino played music at the Party at the Palace in honor of Queen Elizabeth’s gold jubilee. At the end of 2002 Pino Palladino took John Entwistle’s place on the Who’s US Tour. Entwistle tragically died on the eve of the tour and Palladino accepted the job of playing the rest of the tour. Perhaps Pino Palladino’s greatest accomplishment is the extremely large span of genres he has played in or recorded. Whether it be pop, funk, rock, or jazz Palladino has an original feel for any type of music which is a rare and valuable trait. Gear: His main basses include- ’63 Fender Precision Bass (Usually tuned DGCF) Moon Larry Graham Signature Jazz Bass (Usually tuned C#F#BE) ’61 Fender Precision Bass (Tuned EDAG) Other basses that he occasionally uses in shows- ’79 Musicman StingRay ’96 Lakland 55-94 Deluxe 5-string ‘80s reissue Fender Jazz and a Warwick Thumb Bass 5 String Amplification- The Ashdown ABM 900 or the ABM 500 EVO And one or two Epifani T-212D 2x12 Cabinets Discography: http://www.margremollink.nl/palladino/studio/listyear.html Resources: Biography information was found in the March 2004 issue of bass player as well as at http://www.margremollink.nl/palladino/ The gear information was found in the March 2004 issue of Bass Player magazine Last edited by pixiesfanyo; 05-02-2004 at 04:49 PM. |

Great, I love Pino P. He was doing some great fretless work at the same time as Jaco. Nice FA!

I'm still waiting for one. And I have started writing it. I just finished a 16,000 word project, so I have plenty of time to write the next....

The fun about FAs is that you do not know about who it is, so please don't spoil the fun by telling who you're doing it on.
When's the threadstarter to chose the follow-up FA writer? |

Ok... for people who don't know the rules:
The writer of the previous FA picks who goes next, pretty much on a first come first serve basis, with exceptions being things like someone new wants to do one, but someone who has already done one asked first (in this case the decision is up to the threadstarter but it's usually the new guy who wins)... And anyone asking is not supposed to reveal who it's gonna be.. that's a surprise. Just so you know, I asked like a month and a half ago, but the next day had 15 tonnes of work dumped on me. Since then I've had to let others do it, but I finally got all the work off my back last weekend, and am still ready to go on that FA! Enough about me.. but please can I finally do mine? |
