Binge drinking in the UK

Is a problem. Has anyone here given it's prevention much thought?

Reason for thread: the Co-op is now going to start IDing people for alcohol and cigarettes if they look under 25.

Binge drinking is a huge problem here in Australia as well.

The under 25 rule has been in place here for a long time. Most people selling alcohol are incredibly lazy though, and it doesn't really get much attention in my experience.

As for prevention, as long as alcohol is readily available and there to drink yourself to death with somebody is going to do it.

It's not worth the potential consequences if you get caught.

What do I care if a bunch of kids don't get to drink themselves stupid? They can go huff some petrol for all I care.

What's the legal age in Australia?

In the UK it's 18. It's been convention for a long time now to ask for ID if you appear to be under 21, but 25 seems to me completely over the top.

I understand the logic, that 18 year olds these days generally look older than they used to, but given that the under-18 law is designed to combat under-age drinking and not binge drinking, the law in this instance is not fit for purpose.

It seems to me that Co-op (a pretty major supermarket chain, which is naturally coming under fire for not doing enough to combat binge-drinking) is trying to appear to be taking positive steps, whilst at the same time trying desperately not to raise the prices of their cheapest offers and on their cheapest lines, which is actually the chief problem.

It's a personal grievance, given that the only IDs they accept are driving liscences and passports of which I have neither, but after giving it some thought even removing myself from the picture it's still, an annoying and deflective step to take.

they're trying to bring in minimum pricing here for alcohol

but thats dumb what why should i have to pay for it

why shouldnt kids be allowed to drink themselves to death too

Hmm.

They're very strict with it here though. Possibly because the various policies get fiddled with every 6 months.

I'm 6'2", full beard, a few tattoos, university graduate and I tower over the 15 year olds they have behind the counters at supermarkets and it's really winding me up how often I get ID'd, especially compared to the pitifully few times I actually try to buy the stuff from a shop.

Partly I agree. Your stereotypical binge-drinker is never someone I have any sympathy for, and couldn't give two-poops about how they end up of a night (just as soon as they start charging the self-inflicted for wasting the NHS's time). But the trashed club-owners, mugging victims, assault victims etc, I do sympathise with, and I don't mind paying a little extra on occasion if it prevents some measure of anti-social behaviour.

Especially given the cheapest lines are terrible ciders, vodkas and alcopops generally associated with alcohol abuse which I wouldn't touch with a barge pole, and would be hit first and hardest by any price rise.

But generally speaking I think it's the consequences that would be the biggest deterrent, not short-term fiscal injury. If people who needed their stomach pumped of a friday night had to pay the NHS bills for the ambulance, paramedics and Accident and Emergency facilities they required we wouldn't have half the problems we do.

That and national service. But blah blah blah.

Is there any sort of social study that points to a cause or causes for this?

uh are you talking about binge drinking or underage drinking? because IDing people at 25 has little to do with binge drinking
