Who's is everyones all time Idol?
Theres so many that could be possible!
the list would be endless!
I'll probably get loads of people slamming mine as there's more 'greats' but I have to say Noel Gallagher, to me he is a Genious, and to me has wrote some amazing songs (Masterplan, Talk Tonight and Cast no shadow are my pers fav's)
Basically dont slam others just state your own :)

I'll say Greg Ginn, the guitarist from Black Flag, he wrote some awesome songs, and had some wicked solos, and runs like 5 record labels.

PJ Harvey for being able to write songs in so many different ways, selling out arena's without mainstream success and writing her music simply out of gut feeling without any compromise of some sorts...to write music that's brutally honest and to the point. And despite all the image changing and praise from the best selling alt rockers out there...still being so down to earth.

Mike Patton for starting out mainstream and working his way down in order to make the music he wanted to make...instead of trying his best to stay mainstream just for the money and f*cking the groupies. This guy works his butt off to release music not that many people outside his loyal fanbase would buy. I truly respect him.

Those two I admire most right now...

Billy Corgan is deffinetly my idol. He was the first one to really get me into music, which was in 1993.

Tim Kinsella, or Stephen Malkmus.

I even named my cats Mike and Tim Kinsella just so I could go "Kitty-kitty cat, kitty-kitty cat" all the time.

Yeah........What OrbDragon said about Mike Patton. ;)

And then Beck would be my second choice. This guy has done it all on his own... And I love everything he has come up with. He's just one brilliant man.

As a bass player my idol (even though it might seem cliche) is Jaco Pastorius. I'm also a big fan of Glen Diani of One Minute Silence, his style of playing is so dynamic, not to mentioned frenzied. How he can play those basslines while jumping oround quite so much is beyond me.

As a songwriter, and as a regular musician its probably a toss up between Trent Reznor or Maynard James Keenan, both fantastic musicians, and are part of my two favorite bands...

I agree with what Orb said about Mike Patton

Thom Yorke for creating 6 different masterpieces. The bends is currently blowing me away. :)

Hmm... I dig Frank Zappa, though I only have one album.
During my lifetime its been Beck Hansen (thats his full name), or Thom Yorke from Radiohead.

As a guitarist, I'd say my biggest influences are Tom Morello (man, I love him), James Dean Bradfield, Kurt Cobain and Mick Jones.

Lyrically and generally I'd have to go for Richey Edwards, closely followed by Nicky Wire, Zack de la Rocha and Joe Strummer. All of them write great lyrics and have brilliant political ideas and manifestos... it's just sad that two are no longer with us....

Corgan? Cobain? Except for the suicidal part...
Syd Barrert? Maybe...
I guess not anyone, really.

John Mclaughin, but's not "indie".

i will go with Dave grohl, the man is just great. Played in 3 of the best bands ever( QOTSA,Foo Fighters and Nirvana) and hes drummed ofr killing joke aswell, he plays straight out rock and just doesnt really care whether hes succesful or not yes he doesnt shy away from radio or MTV. Josh Homme is my all time musical "idol" but hes not really indie or alternative9 but i spose grohl isnt either).

I just saw Noel Gallagher this weekend at V. I was at the front of the crowd for the coral and looked over to the side of the stage and there he was! My personal favourite would be Thom Yorke however

As others had said already, Stephen Malkmus. He's really the defining figure in all of indie music, IMO.
