Yeah, let's make our own record labels, shall we?

Alright, the most important thing about your label is obviously the name. You can't sell records without a name that sells records. So, make up a good name for your company.

Then of course you've got to have bands on the label. You can choose any bands you like, still around or broken up, signed or unsigned. Try to pick bands from the same genre or similar genres (even though you don't have to be too hard about that...). Maybe you'd like a label with only funk, only death-metal or only nu-reggaebased prog-nintendo-core.

And then when you've got some bands on your label, then fun begins. You can do a lot with your own record label. Examples:

- A tour. What bands are on it? What is it called? etc.

- A compilation cd. Pick songs from your bands, yada yada... Maybe all covers?

- A split cd. Maybe two of your bands could cover some of each others songs? Maybe all of your bands? :amaze:

- A DVD. What's on it?

- A tribute cd. To what band/artist? Your bands could cover songs by that band/arist.

- A live CD/DVD. With one band? Maybe with more bands?

etc...

Be creative, my children! :thumb:

Bands:

Suburban Legends
Big D And The Kids Table
The Forces Of Evil
Reel Big Fish
Streetlight Manifesto
Lightyear
Shootin Goon
King Prawn
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
The Aquabats
The Littlest Man Band
NOFX
Me First And The Gimme Gimmes
Sublime
Mad Caddies
Chub (my friends’ band, unsigned)

That’ll do for now (I’ve probably forgotten some)…

Hmmm, a tour, not sure what I would call it, maybe “Slave In Heaven/ Ska In Hell Tour. I’m no good at naming things! I think it would involve the bands that sound kind of similar.

I would have a tour of the UK involving Suburban Legends, The Forces Of Evil, Reel Big Fish and The Aquabats.

I would have a tour of the US involving the UK bands on my label, Lightyear, Shootin Goon, King Prawn and Chub.

Compilation CD:

Suburban Legends – I Want More/ Bright Spring Morning/ Up All Night
Big D And The Kids Table – Can’t Be Caught/ Find Out/ Myself
The Forces Of Evil – Fight/ Mistake/ Vague Love Song
Reel Big Fish – Beer/ Sell Out/ Somebody Hates Me
Streetlight Manifesto – Everything Went Numb/ Point/Counterpoint/ A Better Place, A Better Time
Lightyear – Three Basics/ Trumpet Trousers/ 200 Kebab Shops
Shootin Goon – Guestlist*Hitlist/ Every Single Time/ Wage Slave
King Prawn – Dominant View/ Not Your Punk/ First Defence
Mighty Mighty Bosstones – The Rascal King/ Noise Brigade/ Another Drinkin’ Song
The Aquabats – My Skateboard/ Pizza Day/ I Fell Asleep On My Arm
The Littlest Man Band – It’s You/ Always Sayin/ Better Man
NOFX – All Outta Angst/ Champs Elysees/ Anarchy Camp
Me First And The Gimme Gimmes – Crazy/ Sci-Fi Double Feature/ Leaving On A Jet Plane
Sublime – Let’s Go Get Stoned/ Date Rape/ Boss D.J.
Mad Caddies – Monkeys/ Nobody Wins At The Laundromat/ Rockupation
Chub – The Mean Streets/ Walkin’ On Sunshine/ I Don’t Care

Split CD:

Very different sounding bands, Big D And The Kids Table and Suburban Legends.

Tracklisting:

Big D And The Kids Table –

Me And You
Waikiki
Autumn In The Park
Powerful Game

Suburban Legends –

Evil Girl/Angry Girl
She Won’t Ever Figure It Out
Scenester
New England

Live CD (all covers):

Suburban Legends - Ska Sucks
Big D And The Kids Table - We Don’t Play Ska Anymore
The Forces Of Evil - Skalifornia
Reel Big Fish - Brain On Ska
Streetlight Manifesto - Thanks For Not Moshing
Lightyear - Skank By Numbers
Shootin Goon - Hip Ska
King Prawn - The Skanking Song
Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Fight
The Aquabats - Ska Muzik
Mad Caddies - Johnny Go Ska

I’m not sure about having a live DVD or anything, those things always kind of seem overpriced and I’d rather go to a show.

But it would be cool to have merchandise that was home-made, like t shirts that have "I Love Ska" sprayed on with paint. They always look cool  Or funny stuff, like trucker hats that say "Kiss Me, I'm Emo" or "Soft Like An Emo"... Yeah.

Well there you go, that’s it for now.

I'm going to own one for real when I graduate college and all that. It's going to be called Big Break Records, and the logo will a fat man eating a hangurger on a record that is broken in half. Our goal will be to sign promising young bands, put them on tour a lot to get their name out there, and get them ready for larger companies, and we can set them on different "paths" for whether or not they know if they want MTV sort of fame, or if they want non commercial success. I am so excited whenever I think about it. :)

Bands:
Radiohead

The Cure
Patti Smith
Television
Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground (Original members sans Nico)
Tom Waits
Elvis Costello
Pearl Jam
Bob Dylan
Jane's Addiction
Aesop Rock
Del Tha Funky Homosapien
Bjork
Talib Kweli
Sigur Ros
Sonic Youth
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
The Mars Volta
The Strokes

It's all pretty art-rock-punk, even the rappers are artsy. And yes, Pearl Jam isn't your average rock band.

Tour:
The tour would be called The Malbad Arts and Music Festival. It would occur in Wyoming, because I never hear anything about that state, and the north of South Florida, since nothing good comes around here. It would have all the bands on my label plus each band gets to bring one extra band they dig. The number would thus be double that on my label. It would be three days long and water will not be $5.00. Tickets prices are as of yet undecided, but will not excede $65.00.

Compilation/Split Record:
Radiohead - Give Me The Cure (Fugazi)
Fugazi - Airbag (Radiohead)
The Cure - Pale Blue Eyes (The Velvet Underground)
Patti Smith - Time (Tom Waits)
Television - Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan)
Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground - Last Nite (The Strokes)
Tom Waits - Abandon All Hope (Aesop Rock)
Elvis Costello - The Manifesto (Talib Kweli)
Pearl Jam - Alison (Elvis Costello)
Bob Dylan - Maps (The Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
Jane's Addiction - Man-Size (PJ Harvey)
Aesop Rock - Welcome To The Working Week (Elvis Costello)
Del Tha Funky Homosapien - Get By/Deltron 3030 *Remix* (Talib Kweli/Deltron 3030 AKA Del)
PJ Harvey - Mountain Song (Jane's Addiction)
Talib Kweli - Get By/Deltron 3030 *Remix* (Talib Kweli/Deltron 3030 AKA Del)
Sigur Ros - Pictures of You *Instrumental* (The Cure)
Sonic Youth - Concertina (The Mars Volta)
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Guiding Light (Television)
The Mars Volta - Untitled One (Sigur Ros)
The Strokes - Mankind (Pearl Jam)

Tom Waits would rearrange Abandon All Hope a bit. Aesop would chane WttWW a bit. Costello would make his own Manifesto. No songs would be straight covers, it's just songs that each band can pull off very well, but I'd prefer them to make the music unique. I'd actually wish that the bands would do this in real life, it'd be a great cd.

DVD:

Footage from the music fest and a week in the life of each band. Each band would really get total control over what goes in their section.

Second Compilation:

Each band comes together to form The MalOrchestra. It's one instrumental track, about an hour long, with occasional singing. Everyone takes part, usually five or more bands/groups of musicians at once.

The Recluse tour would hit the road once a year and visit all of Australia's major cities, including perth, and then go overseas and do the same in Canada, and in other countries worldwide, and then finally come to the USA, tour most of the east coast including NJ, and possibly do the west coast if time allowed. All of the bands/artists would take part in a three day event at all major cities, and individual bands or small groups of bands would play at smaller venues along the way.

A live CD/DVD box set featuring highlights of the tour would be available.

Compilation CD set:

Im not sure about a split CD, but Portishead covers of the Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel and maybe some Cursive songs (Driftwood, The Recluse?) would be pretty cool.

A DVD of the best live and non-live video clips would be released for each artist.

A CD tribute to the Cure sounds good to me..

Whoa, thats one long post. Sorry if it's a lot to read.

Tour (something I forgot in my other post)

They would first do a big tour in Australia, but not go up the east coast! They would go: New Zealand, Tasmania, Northern Territory, Perth, and finish up in Adelaide (my home town :p ) where their gear will have no use to them, so they each smash their gear up after the show. Except for Jimmy page, he gives his Gibson to me.
They would follow that up with a huge world tour.

They would all do a cover of each others songs. two each actually.
