should you ruin your guitar by personalising it?

RememberThisName

YES! ruin your guitar!.....

Solotower
02-28-2004, 05:41 AM
Well, if you believe it is ruining it to personalise it, then there's really no question, is there?

rager

i thought about covering mine in duct tape like the offspring's Noodles. what about anyone else

RememberThisName

Thats not personalising really? your just copying.

I've been considering putting a pretty cool fake tatoo on mine, but it's hard to find a good place to put it where it will fit and won't get worn off too quickly.

I don't intend to sell any of my guitars anyway, so I don't consider that a problem, but for instance I wouldn't personalise my Jackson, cos it looks way too nice as it is. But then my first ever guitar which was crap I totally ripped apart, repainted, put some designs on and stuff then put back together again.

im planning on 'personalising' my steinberger, gonna see about new buckers and a custom scratch plate with some chinese or korean or japanese, haven't decided which yet though

Paul

i'd never chop up a guitar...again, it all ended very badly, mainly cause i didnt know what i was doing but it's not something to be taken lightly.

I like what Tom Morello does, writing a phrase on his guitars, like "Arm the Homeless" and "Soul Power". Wouldn't do it to one of mine though.

itd work if you used acrylic paint- it's not actually hard to do though isnt screen printing- I do it at college so I guess I have an advantage- but you could go to your nearest college if they have an art block and ask them theyll probably let you

Im building a guitar at the moment, does any body have ideas for a paint job. I was thinking of doing a black to red fade or a black body with blue and white lightning.
What do you think

Phunphone
02-28-2004, 09:51 AM
^^^^
Black body with random blue and white "spits" on it, that'd be cool.

I was thinking how can you personalise a PRS without ruining it. I guess you just can't.

mynamesucks
02-28-2004, 10:05 AM
what do you mean by spits?

Phunphone
02-28-2004, 10:58 AM
:) I knew it! I knew I used the wrong word :upset:

All right, I'll try to explain it. I thought that you could paint it black, and then, blue and white over black which would look like you've just spitted blue and white paint on the guitar, or threw blue and white paint, so that it looks like a random paint job. If done properly, it'd look cool. So it's a non- symmertical paint job.

Paul
02-28-2004, 11:07 AM
just checked and ed roman aint got what i want, fat bastard, so im going to have to get a blank scratch plate from somewhere and then ensribe it somehow

Take off your pickguard, send them a tracing of yours, and they'll make you a custom one to fit. Or you could go to Warmoth.com and buy a blank pickguard sheet and do it yourself.

Is there any kind of tape that I could put on my guitar and not have it leave a ton of residue or mess up the paint job? I see a lot of people who have black electric tape on theirs, so I figured I could lay down the easy to remove tape and then put a stick or something on top of that.

Mayonnaise
02-28-2004, 01:21 PM
Do you mean to cover the guitar in it and leave the tape on or cover a certain bit with tape paint and then take it off so that the bit you dont want painting remains unpainted?

rager
02-28-2004, 02:15 PM
if he/she means they want something for masking then use airbrush masking film, if they want to keep the tape on there then use vinyl, this looks professional and (like on the fender mustangs) or if you want to completely cover the guitar why not use silver duct tape, I did! so far there isn't any residue when you take it off but over time i bet it will.

I would change the pickups and hardware, but I doubt I would do any major stuff to it.

I wouldn't mind buying a cheap guitar to make it into something really wierd, but that would probably be a waste of money.

shadow_stalker
02-28-2004, 03:08 PM
as long as it isnt an expensive guitar i wouldnt have a problem peronalising it but if it was expensive and i was rich then i would personalise it

Do you mean some sort of splatter effect? Like someone has flicked paint from a paint brush over it?

I think if you buy a guitar and you don't plan on keeping it for a long time then you shouldn't customize it. But if it is a good guitar and you feel like cutomizing it and you are going to keep it then do it.

i really like that apart from the plain white pickgaurd, if you've got some stickers left stick em on it or better berak the plate in half and screw it back on.

i figured my cheapass Ibanez GAX70 wasnt gonna even have a resale value, so i figured what the hell, got some model paint, and did it myself.

also, i threw in a pic of the guitar that i built from warmoth parts. turned out beautifllly. never seen a les paul that looked this good. its been finished since tat pic, and im currently painting the headstock in prep for putting my logo on.

why not make a custom plate yourself, you can get pickguard plastic at the brandoni site,

It depends what you mean by "personalising"....

Remember, this can go from a little sticker or something on the back of the guitar where nobody can see it to a full new paint/hacksaw job.
:thumb:

It clearly affects the resale value of a guitar. No matter how good the guitar is, most people tend not to want to buy something with other people's stickers/doodles/re-spray jobs on them....
